Why I Love Chanel

Fashion, Uncategorized

Chanel is the first luxury brand that I learned about and fell in love with. My mom used to purchase Chanel shirts, and other clothing and have it tailored to fit me when I was little. Today, I still love wearing my Chanel ballerina flats, costume jewelry, handbags, (and clothes that I take from my mom’s closet). I love Chanel for so many reasons, starting with the history and its quality.

BRIEF HISTORY

Mademoiselle Gabrielle Chanel, or Coco, reinvented fashion for women and always thought outside the box. She loved to incorporate hidden meanings behind all her designs in every collection, and this is still seen in Chanel collections today. Chanel symbols include the Camelia, Lions, Comets, and Coromandel. The Camelia was Coco’s favorite flower because it has a subtle scent that would not interfere with other fragrances. Lions often appear in collections because her Zodiac sign was Leo and she liked the meaning of strength behind lions. She loved comets because she would often look up to the stars for inspiration and guidance for her designs. In her collections with comets, the stars are never symmetrical and none are exactly the same, just how she thought all woman are different and unique. Lastly, she loved Coromandel and had many screens at her Parisian apartment above the Rue Cambon boutique, where she hosted her friends. You can often see this Asian influence in Chanel’s jewelry collections and fashion. “Mademoiselle Prive” often comes up in collections as well because it was written on the door of her workshop at Rue Cambon in Paris.

Icon’s are “products which embodies the spirit and style of the brand, and is considered as such by the market.” A few Chanel icons include Chanel #5 fragrance, the classic flap bag, and tweed jackets. Her pieces are all about storytelling, which Chanel continues that legacy today.

WATCHES AND FINE JEWELRY

Chanel launched its first watch in 1987, but Gabrielle Chanel started her Fine Jewelry collection in 1932. By this time, she had already made an impact in the fashion world. The leading diamond company, De Beers Diamond Jewellers, reached out to Coco to design a new and unique collection at a time when people were not making unnecessary expenses due to the Great Depression. Only 10 out of 40 pieces from Bijoux De Diamants sold at her first jewelry show, but she changed the way people looked at jewelry. She displayed her jewelry on mannequins and would do their hair and makeup, instead of using the velvet pillows to display jewelry which were popular at the time. She wanted women to know how it would look and make them feel. Chanel stands out from other competing brands in this industry because the designers create the designs for all watches and jewelry first, and then they create the engineering behind it. Most companies think of the engineering first, choose the stones they want to use, and then create a design based around that. Chanel has Costume Jewelry which you can find at most boutiques, Precious Jewelry which cost less than $50,000 and has multiple collections per year, and High Jewelry which cost over $50,000 and only has 2 collections per year.

FRAGRANCE & BEAUTY

Chanel has only had 4 perfumers in its history: Ernest Beaux (1921-1954), Henri Robert (1953-1978), Jacques Polge (1978-2013), Olivier Polge (2013-present). The brand uses exceptional flowers to create their distinct and unique scents such as sage, mint, cedar, vetiver, sandalwood, ylang-ylang, vanilla, patchouli, orange blossom, citrus, jasmine, may rose, and exotic rose. The same craftsmanship seen in the luxury brands fashion and accessories, can also be seen in its fragrance and beauty. The No. 5 fragrance has become an iconic fragrance that is known around the world for its distinct smell and beautifully designed bottle. Lucia Pica is the current Global Creative Makeup & Color Designer for Chanel. Her favorite color is red, so she makes sure to incorporate it into her makeup collections. Red is the #1 selling eye shadow pallet and is a powerful color for the brand. Dr. Amy Wescher is the dermatologist used to help formulate some of the Chanel skincare products. Chanel also has many scientists, etc to create new and innovative formulas for the brand, such as Solution 10 and Hydra Micro Gel.

FASHION

In the early 1900s, when women were still confined to corsets and dresses to their ankles, Coco brought pants to women. She believed in practicality, if a women rode horses, she should be able to wear pants, etc. Coco also brought the women’s blazer to the fashion world at the time. Her designs and collections were heavily influenced by the male figures in her life. Gabrielle had many boyfriends that helped her become the famous icon that we all know and love today. They played an important role in her social, professional, and sentimental life. Coco became an iconic luxury fashion designer in the early 1900s and is still one of the top fashion houses today. People fall in love with Chanel because of its class and timeless pieces. Today, there are 3 major forces behind the Fashion House: Eric Pfrunder- image director, Virginie Viard- Fashion studio director, Karl Lagerfeld- head creative director. Chanel has 6 ready-to-wear collections per year and 2 Haute Couture collections per year. Conveniently, Karl Lagerfeld’s office sits above Coco Chanel’s apartment at 31 Rue Cambon boutique in Paris. When he creates new collections, he goes down and grabs a trinket and bases an entire collection off of it. Chanel has about 200 boutiques world wide and sell wholesale in about 40 countries around the world. The Haute Couture pieces never make it to the boutiques because they are one of a kind, completely hand-made, and made to measure- for the perfect fit. Chanel makes sure that only one person in the same inner circle receives a certain piece. This makes Chanel’s Haute Couture designs very exclusive,  whoever does get to purchase a piece has a team at their disposal for custom fittings.

The luxury fashion house has 2 stylists in the United States. Understanding body morphology is very important in styling different women of different body types (X, H, V, A). They also keep in mind the 4 paradoxes of Chanel: masculine & feminine, minimalism & ornamentation, classic & irreverence, casualness & sophistication. When styling different women they also need to think about the different style families: boyish, lady chic, rock, minimalist, bohemian, glamorous, off duty, feminine, and preppy. I have a V body type and my style is minimalist, but i fluctuate depending on my mood 😀 Chanel pays close attention to detail in everything that they do, which is what makes the brand so successful and is why everyone loves it.

PHILANTHROPY

While interning at Chanel, I learned that the company employs approximately 80% women and 20% men. When I heard those numbers I immediately felt so proud to be a part of the company, even if its just for the summer, especially since its rare to be a part of a company that is predominately female. They also mentioned that both women and men get family leave, and had an entire session for employs on how to balance family & work. Chanel offers incredible sessions for their employees. On top of their awesome standards, Chanel has its own Foundation, Foundation CHANEL. “Our mission is to advance women’s and girl’s independence and empowerment by increasing their access to economic resources and entrepreneurship opportunities, education and training, leadership and decision-making as well as health and social protection.” I will include the link for more information about the Foundation below!

Las Vegas, NV: Waking Up 21 In Vegas!

Fashion, Travel, Travel Guides, Uncategorized

Last weekend, I finally turned 21! I was fortunate enough to spend the weekend with my family and best friends in Las Vegas. I had never been there before so I did not know what to expect. We stayed at The Cosmopolitan Hotel of Las Vegas and attended two shows, The Mentalist and Britney Spears, who I have loved ever since I was a little girl!

We arrived on Friday, October 27th and by the time we landed, we were so hungry. Thankfully, my friend got us reservations at Jaleo, which is now one of my favorite restaurants. After lunch, we went to Milk for dessert, got ready and headed out to see The Mentalist. I volunteered to go on stage and he actually picked me, which never happens to me. He was amazing! I told him it was my birthday and he ended up gifting me a USB with videos and his book on it. After the show, we went to Beauty and Essex for dinner. Everything this day ended up being inside our hotel, which was very convenient.

To the airport and lunch, I wore a Saks gray cashmere sweater, L’agence jeans with zippers on the side, off-white Chanel ballerina slippers, and my new Gucci purse, which was a birthday gift from my mom.

For The Mentalist and dinner, I wore a Hervé Léger dress, beige Valentino strappy heels, and my little black Chanel cross-body purse.

On Saturday, October 28th- my birthday, we went to brunch before going to the DryBar and getting out hair done. The salon in Vegas has a full bar inside- only in VEGAS! We walked around and then had lunch at Chica. Of course, I also had to gamble a little bit. In the evening, we went on a helicopter tour of the city. At night, we saw the Britney Spears’ show. I had so much fun! Since it was “halloweekend” a lot of her fans dressed up as Britney in her iconic music videos. During the day, I wore a navy bodysuit from Kittenish, L’agence jeans, my Gucci purse, and navy velvet Cole Haan sneakers, which were a birthday gift from my aunt.

At night, I wore a silver sequined dress from Express with silver Christian Dior heals and my black Chanel cross-body purse. Also, my mom bought be the cutest balloons and then accidentally popped the “2” for 21 😀

Sunday, October 30th was our last day in Vegas and I was so sad to leave. We woke up and had brunch at Whisk Spoon again, which was also inside the hotel. They had a huge buffet with delicious food. Some of us had different flights so we had to part ways. We finally had some time to walk around and enjoy the beautiful city. In the morning, I wore my L’agence jeans with a strapless top from Express, fuchsia Tory Burch flip flops and my Gucci bag. After 2 nights of wearing heels and doing so much walking, the only shoes I could wear were flip flops! For the airport, I changed into a Britney Spears t-shirt from the show and my pink Adidas slides.

One day, we drove by the famous “Welcome to Las Vegas” sign where we saw people adding flowers and pictures of those who were shot during the horrible shooting that recently occurred in the city. I am so happy that I was finally able to visit Vegas, it was always one of my dreams to come for my 21st birthday.

Dallas, TX: BAM Beauty Bar

Beauty & Wellness, Hair & Makeup, Uncategorized

I was immediately impressed when I walked into the grand opening of BAM Beauty Bar, last month. It has to be one of the prettiest salons in Dallas, with the best photo-op in West Village. I absolutely loved it. The interior of the salon is sleek and chic. The unique wall behind the check-in desk is covered with white 3D flowers and it is definitely picture-worthy. This chic salon offers blowouts, makeup, special monthly packages and uses amazing products like Balmain Hair Couture and Dyson Hair Dryers. I have been wanting to try the Dyson Supersonic hair dryers for so long now. At the end of the event, everyone received goodie bags with delicious macaroons. If you stop by the salon, don’t forget, it’s the perfect photo-op! @BamBeautyBar

Inside Look- SMU Costume Department

Fashion, Opinion, SMU, Uncategorized

This week the Media and Art of Fashion Design class took a mini field trip to Southern Methodist University’s Meadows School of the Arts costume design shop. It was really interesting to learn about what happens behind-the-scenes of SMU productions. When we first arrived we were greeted by Professor Stephens in the Green Room where she spoke to us about the amount of work that goes into designing costumes for every actor on stage. She also spoke about the importance of getting the costumes perfect in order to help the audience fully understand the story and how the stage lighting can significantly impact the colors of the fabrics. The designers need to put thought into how the costumes will appear on stage with different lighting and different viewpoints from the audience. Meadows puts on at least seven plays and several dance shows every year. That’s a lot of costumes that need to be designed!

Every costume has to be tailor-made to fit each actor perfectly, so they need to be remeasured quite often, especially guys who are still growing! Since this takes so much time, effort, and money, the costumes are sometimes reused and refurbished. They have numerous of options to chose from with a wide array of hats, shoes, clothing, and unused fabrics. Professor Stephens also took us under the stage and showed us the trap doors, where the orchestra gets on stage and storage for more costumes.

When designing costumes for live performances, you need to think ahead and always have backup plans just incase something goes wrong. When creating the costumes, they often times try to eliminate zippers and buttons, because it takes longer to put on and take off. Sometimes, actors need to be back on stage within a few seconds. This was a really fascinating experience and I am so happy we got to see and learn what the costume department at SMU is like.

Fabrics, Findings & Trims

Fashion, Opinion, SMU, Uncategorized

Fabrics are obviously an essential part to fashion design and there are numerous options to choose from. Ever since I was little, I loved watching Project Runway and my favorite episodes have always been the ones that contestants take a trip to Mood Fabrics and decide what materials they want to use for their creations. Many designers are known for using certain fabrics in their designs and it becomes a staple that they become famous for, such as Chanel, Dolce & Gabbana, Missoni, Hervé Léger, etc.

The first brand that came to my mind when discussing fabrics, findings and trims in class was, Chanel. Coco Chanel made the luxury brand popular with the classic suits, which are usually made with solid or tweed fabric with custom gold buttons, patch pockets, a beautiful trim and more. A lot went into creating the iconic Chanel suit, which eventually became a fashion symbol. Since 1983, Karl Lagerfeld has incorporated beautiful fabrics and embroidery in all his designs for the fashion house.

But there are several fashion designers that use certain fabrics in their collections, which eventually made the brands famous, including Dolce & Gabbana. This luxury Italian fashion house has always incorporated sheer materials, such as lace, tulle, and chiffon to create a sexy look for their collections. Dolce & Gabbana also uses a lot of fabrics with embroidery and prints. Some of their beautiful designs are even handprinted on dresses and accessories. Dolce & Gabbana always has amazing fabrics for all their designs, in every collection!

The purpose of fabrics, findings and trims is to be functional and decorative, which all designers keep in mind when designing their collections. This is something that designers have always had to think about, looking back to designers such as Sonia Rykiel, who was known for all her soft knitted sweaters and dresses. She earned the title of “Queen of Knits” in the late 1960s. A lot of hard work goes into creating beautiful garments.

“What I find modern is the balanced use of both traditional fabrics and new textiles. It’s the idea of combining well-known quality with new surfaces that makes them exciting.” – Helmut Lang

Politics on the Runway

Fashion, Opinion, SMU, Uncategorized

As a person who loves fashion and is very interested in politics, the line can sometimes gets a little fuzzy.   When I read that designers such as: Marc Jacobs, Tom Ford, Phillip Lim, Zac Posen and many more, refused to dress the First Lady, Melania Trump, I was a little taken back. Shouldn’t anyone be honored to dress the First Lady of the United States of America? I don’t think it should matter whether you are a Republican or a Democrat. As an American, I felt that the designers who spoke out against dressing the First Lady, should have considered all their clients before making such a statement.

Screen Shot 2017-09-25 at 1.08.00 PM.png

When I found out that various designers including, Ralph Lauren and Dolce and Gabbana, were willing to dress the First Lady, I was very pleased and proud to be a fan. I do not think that Melania should be blacklisted for her husbands politics, but some designers disagree.

Ivanka Trump, the daughter of President Trump, created her fashion label and had it in major departments stores like Nordstrom, Neiman Marcus and Dillards. After she announced that she would be working alongside her father, she received a lot of backlash for not disconnecting herself from her label. Herself being an Independent, I do not think that she should have received so much criticism and people saying that they will never buy from her line again. Some department stores were forced to drop her line due to people boycotting them until they did so.

Screen Shot 2017-09-25 at 1.10.19 PM.png

In the Fashion industry, politics has been a recurring theme thanks to iconic designers such as Katherine Hamnett, Jean Paul Gaultier, Karl Lagerfeld and more. This season designers incorporated white bandanas in their fashion shows to symbolize acceptance and inclusivity. This is a positive message that people enjoy.

I believe the line gets blurred with fashion and politics because when do you really know once the line was crossed? A designer might be insulting thousands of customers, but maybe creating new customers who want to buy.
